About the Event

Artist, horticulturalist, garden designer, writer, photographer, businesswoman - and much more besides, Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) was a phenomenal talent and also a trailblazer for women – she enrolled in the Kensington School of Art in 1861 at a time when such an idea was considered scandalous in polite society. Gertrude designed over 400 gardens; approximately 100 of them in collaboration with the architect, Edwin Lutyens.

About the speaker: Lesley trained in horticulture at Brinsbury College, Pulborough, then qualified as a garden designer. She is an experienced lecturer and tour guide. She is also an Assistant County Organiser for the West Sussex National Gardens Scheme.
